3. Texas Mandatory Checklist (20 Hrs Total)
- 20 hrs — CNE in your area of practice (or Board-approved national certification), every 2 yrs
- 1 course — Human Trafficking Prevention (HHSC-approved, every period, if you provide direct patient care)
- 2 hrs — Nursing Jurisprudence and Ethics (every 3rd period; certification cannot substitute)
- 2 hrs — Older Adult / Geriatric Care (every period, if your practice includes older adults)
- 2 hrs — Forensic Evidence Collection (one time, for ER nurses)
4. Texas RN Renewal Guide & FAQ
- Total hours
- 20 contact hrs of CNE in your area of practice per 2-yr licensing period (or a Board-approved national certification)
- Deadline
- Last day of your birth month. Odd birth year = odd years, even birth year = even years.
- Reporting
- No upload. You attest at renewal and keep certificates for 6 years. Random audits are selected 90 days before your renewal month.
- First renewal
- Exempt from most CE if you renew on time (Forensic Evidence Collection still applies to ER nurses)
CE Broker & reporting
Texas does not use mandatory CE Broker reporting. Keep each certificate (provider, title, date, contact hours, provider number, accrediting agency). If you are audited, you upload proof in the eSS portal (ce.esslearning.com) and cannot renew until it is approved.
How to renew your Texas RN license
- Complete 20 contact hours in your area of practice within your licensing period.
- Complete any targeted CE that applies to you (Human Trafficking if you give direct patient care; Jurisprudence & Ethics every 3rd period).
- Save every certificate for 6 years.
- Renew with the Texas BON by the last day of your birth month and attest that you completed the requirements.
- If you get an audit notice, submit proof through the eSS portal.
BLS / ACLS
Under Board Rule 216.6, BLS and CPR do not count toward Texas CNE, and ACLS/PALS cards are not accepted as CE proof. Employers usually require them separately.
Late or lapsed renewal
An expired license goes delinquent, and you cannot practice. If it has been delinquent less than 4 years, renew with proof of 20 CNE hours (or certification) from the prior 2 years. At 4 years or more, Board Rule 217.6 applies.
How many CE hours do Texas RNs need to renew?
20 contact hours of continuing nursing education in your area of practice each 2-year licensing period, or a Board-approved national nursing certification achieved, maintained, or renewed in that period. Nurses who provide direct patient care must also complete an HHSC-approved Human Trafficking Prevention course every licensing period.
When is Texas Nursing Jurisprudence and Ethics required?
At least 2 contact hours before the end of every third two-year licensing period (about every 6 years). These hours count toward the 20. A national certification cannot substitute for this requirement; only traditional CNE counts.
Does the Texas Board of Nursing accept ANCC-accredited CE?
Yes. The Board recognizes CE approved by the ANCC, AACN, AANA, AANP, ACNM, ENA, NAPNES, NALPN, NAPNAP, NLN, TLVN, U.S. colleges and universities, and other state boards of nursing, as long as the course is in your area of practice.
Does BLS or ACLS count toward Texas nursing CE?
No. Under Board Rule 216.6, BLS and CPR courses do not count toward Texas CE, and ACLS or PALS certification cards are not accepted as proof of CE. Your employer may still require a current card.
What happens if I'm audited by the Texas BON?
The Board randomly selects nurses 90 days before their renewal month and notifies them by mail (and email if on file). You submit proof online through the eSS portal and cannot renew until it is approved; allow up to 10 business days. Keep your certificates for at least 6 years.
