How to renew your Michigan RN license

  1. Complete 25 hours of approved CE (at least 2 hours in pain and symptom management) during the 2-year period, earning no more than 12 hours in a single 24-hour period.
  2. Complete 1 hour of Implicit Bias training for each year of your license cycle, plus one-time Human Trafficking training if not already completed.
  3. Log in at www.michigan.gov/miplus when renewal opens (about 90 business days before expiration).
  4. Certify your CE compliance and pay the $131 renewal fee by Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover.
  5. Retain all CE certificates for at least 4 years.

BLS / ACLS

The Michigan RN Licensing Guide does not list BLS/ACLS as a license renewal requirement. Check with your employer.

Late or lapsed renewal

Michigan offers a 60-day grace period after expiration ($131 renewal fee + $20 late fee). After that the license lapses: if lapsed less than 3 years, relicensure requires 25 CE hours (including 2 in pain management) plus implicit bias and human trafficking training. If lapsed 3 to 7 years, you also need 3 hours each in safe documentation, critical thinking, delegation/supervision, professional accountability, and pharmacology, plus a skills competency certification. If lapsed 7+ years, you must retake the NCLEX.

How many CE hours do Michigan RNs need to renew?

25 hours of Board-approved continuing education in the 2 years preceding renewal, including at least 2 hours in pain and symptom management. You may not earn more than 12 CE hours during a single 24-hour period.

Does Implicit Bias or Human Trafficking training count toward the 25 CE hours in Michigan?

Michigan requires 1 hour of Implicit Bias training for each year of your license cycle at every renewal, plus a one-time Human Trafficking training. Implicit Bias training is required in addition to the 25 CE hours.

Do newly licensed Michigan RNs need CE on their first renewal?

Licenses originally issued on or after May 8, 2024 are required to complete CE for their first renewal.

Which CE accrediting organizations does the Michigan Board of Nursing accept?

Michigan accepts CE approved by ANCC, AANA, AANP, ACCME, ACNM, AMA, AOA, NACNS, NAPNES, NLN, another state or provincial board of nursing, or a Michigan Board-approved nursing education program.

How do I renew my Michigan RN license and what if it expires?

Renew online at www.michigan.gov/miplus ($131 fee; a 60-day grace period adds a $20 late fee). Retain CE records for 4 years for random LARA audits (CE Broker is optional). If lapsed under 3 years, relicensure requires 25 CE hours including 2 in pain management; 3–7 years adds 15 specified topic hours and skills competency certification; 7+ years requires retaking the NCLEX.
