CE Broker & reporting

Illinois does not require CE Broker submission at renewal; nurses attest on their IDFPR renewal and keep certificates for audit. Nurses who do not work with children may attest to that for the mandated reporter requirement.

How to renew your Illinois RN license

  1. Complete 20 hours of approved CE within the 2-year renewal cycle.
  2. Include 1 hour of Sexual Harassment Prevention and 1 hour of Implicit Bias Awareness each renewal.
  3. Before your first renewal with CE (and at least once every 6 years after), complete 1 hour of Cultural Competency, plus 1 hour of Alzheimer's/Dementia training if you provide direct care to adults age 26+, and Mandated Reporter training within 3 months of employment / every 6 years if you work with children.
  4. Retain your completion certificates and renew through IDFPR.

BLS / ACLS

The Illinois IDFPR nursing CE pages do not list BLS/ACLS as a license renewal requirement. Employers set their own BLS/ACLS rules.

Late or lapsed renewal

Contact IDFPR for restoration steps if your license is not renewed before expiration.

How many CE hours do Illinois RNs need to renew?

20 hours per 2-year renewal cycle (such as the June 1, 2024 – May 31, 2026 RN cycle). Mandatory topic hours count toward the 20-hour total.

What mandatory CE topics apply to Illinois RNs every renewal?

Every renewal requires 1 hour of Sexual Harassment Prevention training and 1 hour of Implicit Bias Awareness training. Beginning July 1, 2026, nurses who provide care to maternal populations must ensure their implicit bias training includes maternal health content.

Which Illinois nursing CE topics are required every 6 years?

Before your first renewal requiring CE and at least once every 6 years thereafter: 1 hour of Cultural Competency; 1 hour of Alzheimer's and other dementias training (only if you provide direct care to adults age 26 or older); and Mandated Reporter training within 3 months of employment and every 6 years for RNs who work with children (others may attest that they do not).
