3. California Mandatory Checklist (30 Hrs Total)
- 30 hrs — BRN-approved CEP courses every 2 yrs (home study unlimited; CPR/BLS not accepted)
- 1 hr — Implicit Bias (required within the first 2 years of initial licensure, even though first renewal is otherwise exempt)
- 6 hrs — Gerontology / care of older patients (for Nurse Practitioners if >25% of patients are 65+)
4. California RN Renewal Guide & FAQ
- Total hours
- 30 contact hrs per 2-yr active renewal from a BRN-recognized provider (CEP)
- First renewal
- Exempt from the 30 hrs for the first 2 yrs after initial licensure, EXCEPT the 1-hr Implicit Bias course
- Home study
- No limit — all 30 contact hrs may be taken via home study / online
- Records & audit
- Keep certificates for 4 years. Random BRN compliance audits apply.
CE Broker & reporting
California does not require CE Broker upload. Confirm each provider's CEP number is active on BreEZe (breeze.ca.gov) before taking a course, attest at renewal, and retain certificates for 4 years in case of audit. First-time renewers after NCLEX enter 'EXEMPT' as provider, 'NCLEX' as course, and '30' as hours.
How to renew your California RN license
- Complete 30 contact hours within your 2-year renewal period from a BRN-approved CEP (or complete the 1-hr Implicit Bias course if this is your first renewal after initial licensure).
- If you are a Nurse Practitioner and more than 25% of your patients are 65 or older, include at least 6 hours in gerontology / care of older patients.
- Verify your provider's CEP number on BreEZe.
- Log in to BreEZe to submit your renewal and attest to your completed CE.
- Keep your certificates for 4 years in case of a random audit.
BLS / ACLS
The California BRN explicitly states that CPR, BLS, basic EKG, and basic IV courses are NOT accepted for RN CE renewal credit (only CPR/BLS/ALS instructor courses are accepted). Employers usually require a current BLS card separately.
Late or lapsed renewal
To reactivate an inactive license or renew a delinquent or lapsed license, you must submit 30 contact hours taken within the preceding 2 years.
How many CE hours do California RNs need to renew?
30 contact hours every 2 years for an active license, taken through a continuing education provider (CEP) recognized by the California Board of Registered Nursing. All 30 hours may be completed through home study or online courses.
Are new California RNs exempt from CE on their first renewal?
New licensees are exempt from the 30-hour CE requirement for the first two years after initial licensure, EXCEPT they must complete the 1-hour Implicit Bias course from an approved provider. First-time renewers after NCLEX enter 'EXEMPT' as provider, 'NCLEX' as course, and '30' as hours in BreEZe.
Do CPR, BLS, or CME Category 1 courses count toward California RN CE?
CPR, BLS, basic EKG, and basic IV courses are NOT accepted by the California BRN (only CPR/BLS/ALS instructor courses count). CME Category 1 courses are accepted when related to the scientific knowledge or technical skills of nursing practice.
How do I check if a CE provider is approved by the California BRN?
Look up the provider's CEP number on the Department of Consumer Affairs BreEZe system (breeze.ca.gov) to confirm the CEP number is active before taking the course.
How long must California RNs keep CE certificates?
Retain your CE certificates for 4 years from the date of course completion. The BRN conducts random compliance audits.
